Environmentally friendly, sustainable & pretty
Even though I am a Greenpeace patron, I did not turn into an environmental activist. But, not only in regard of what is happening in the world (flooding, wildfires,...) things simply have to change. In order for this to be successful, we have to change and adapt too. The vastness of this task can feel overwhelming and paralysing, but instead of despairing and doing nothing at all, we can start with small changes in our day to day life.
And that’s exactly what I did in the last few years: small changes. Some examples: Washing soda, baking soda & soap flakes instead of washing powder, vinegar instead of fabric softener ; washing soda, baking soda & citric acid instead of dishwasher tabs, vinegar as rinse aid ; hair soap bars instead of liquid shampoo ; vinegar rinse instead of conditioner ; block soap instead of liquid soap. I make deodorants myself (coconut butter, corn starch, baking soda, beeswax & essential oils), also lip balm, hand cream, perfume and shoe polish. And we eat organic foods and/or local products by preference.
Cross my heart: apart from the fact that I have gathered the things & arranged them photogenically, there is nothing fake about this picture! My husband and sons use Aleppo soap, I use artisanal bars of soap, our Q-Tips & toothbrushes are made of bamboo & the toothpaste comes plastic-free in pastille form.
So, I‘ve not been comfortable with the Atelier Marie-Lucienne product range for a while. My stitch markers (even though they are beautiful, cute and/or funny) came/come from the Far East. And that should gradually change. Hence the headline: environmentally friendly, sustainable & pretty.
The new stitch markers range will be made with as many ecological justifiable materials as possible. Starting with FSC-certified birch and poplar wood, to eco-test winner chalk paints and beeswax for sealing. I (still) cut back on the glue, the origami paper and the hooks. But who knows ecologically friendly alternatives, please feel free to contact me via the contact page or in the comments below!
In the next blog post I will show how wooden stitch markers are made.
